Doug Buschman, T.O.Carm.
Provincial Coordinator
As I begin serving as Provincial Coordinator for the Lay Carmelites of the Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary, I do so with deep gratitude, humility, and a keen awareness that this work belongs first to God and to Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
My name is Doug Buschman, and my wife, Nancy, and I live just north of Washington, D.C., in Gaithersburg, Maryland. We have 4 children and 6 grandchildren who are scattered across the country.
My Carmelite journey started with a special relationship with Mary and a love of being with God in the silence. Carmel has reinforced my desire for prayer, silence, community, and service in the midst of ordinary life. Like all Lay Carmelites, I have come to understand Carmel not as something separate from daily life, but as a way of living more attentively in the presence of God.
For me, Carmel is about learning to listen for God, to stand faithfully in His presence, and to allow that presence to shape how we love and serve others. But it is also about bringing Elijah's zeal and passion to everything God asks of us.
I am deeply grateful for the many members of the Carmelite Family, the Lay Carmelites, Sisters, and Friars, who modeled what living The Carmelite Way really means. I am especially grateful to Cindy Perazzo, whose love and care for the Lay Carmelites was the perfect model of servant leadership. She guided us through the transition from being led by religious to being led by the laity. Cindy has built deep relationships with each of the Lay Carmelites she has encountered. She will continue to represent us on the International Lay Carmelite Council.
I see this role primarily as one of service: listening, supporting, encouraging, and helping our communities remain rooted in the Carmelite charism. One of my goals is to increase the awareness of Carmel throughout our Province. I hope that we will continue to deepen our identity as Lay Carmelites: people of prayer, people formed in community, and people sent forth in service. I also hope we can help more Catholics discover that Carmel offers a profound and practical way to live close to God amid family, parish, work, and daily responsibilities. The Lay Carmelite Office will also be working to improve our infrastructure, helping everyone be more connected to the Carmelite Order; to be part of the Carmelite Family.
I ask for your prayers as I begin this new journey, and I assure you of mine. May Our Lady of Mount Carmel guide us, may Elijah’s zeal strengthen us, and may Christ remain always at the center of our life together.
